With a significant number of ‘None of the Above’ (NOTA) votes cast in the recent Lok Sabha elections across various constituencies in Delhi, it is evident that voter dissatisfaction remains prevalent in the capital.
The North-West Delhi constituency recorded the highest number of NOTA votes, reaching 8,984, in a contest where BJP‘s Yogender Chandoliya emerged victorious with a substantial margin against Congress’ Udit Raj.
In contrast, the New Delhi constituency witnessed the lowest count of NOTA votes with 4,813 voters opting to reject all candidates, with BJP’s Bansuri Swaraj pitted against AAP‘s Somnath Bharti.
Other constituencies such as Chandni Chowk, North-East Delhi, East Delhi, South Delhi, and West Delhi saw varying numbers of voters selecting the NOTA option, illustrating a diverse sentiment among the electorate.
Former chief election commissioner O P Rawat highlighted that while NOTA has a symbolic impact, for it to be legally effective and impact poll results, a scenario where it garners over 50% of the votes in a particular seat would need to be considered.
