Holon Resident Arrested for Stabbing Partner Amid Rising Femicide Concerns
Police have arrested a resident of Holon on suspicion of stabbing his partner, resulting in serious injuries to the victim on Monday night. The arrest comes after an ongoing police investigation which began earlier this month when the woman, in her 30s, was admitted to Kaplan Medical Center in critical condition.
The suspect had fled the scene and managed to evade law enforcement before being apprehended in the northern region of the country. Authorities have indicated that they will seek to extend his detention at a court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
Reports indicate that the altercation was sparked by the victim’s desire to end her relationship with the suspect, as noted by Maariv.
This incident occurs in the context of heightened concerns regarding femicide in Israel, particularly following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war. According to the Israel Observatory on Femicide (IOF) at Hebrew University, the year 2024 has seen the tragic deaths of 11 women in femicide cases so far.
Furthermore, the IOF reported that one-third of the femicides recorded in 2023 took place after the onset of the conflict. It is important to note that this figure does not include women who were murdered during the Hamas attack on Israel, despite some of these cases involving gender-based violence.
The observatory’s data indicates that over half of the femicide victims in 2023 were killed by stabbing, while 18% were shot.
The IOF continues to call for action to eradicate femicide, which they recognize as the most extreme form of violence against women.
