Hyundai and Kia Issue Recall Affecting Over 208,000 Electric Vehicles
Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Corporation have announced a recall affecting more than 208,000 electric vehicles due to a potential issue that can lead to a loss of drive power. This recall decision is in response to a defect that may increase the risk of crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall involves over 145,000 Hyundai vehicles, which includes some models of IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 EVs, as well as the Genesis line, specifically the GV60, GV70, and GV80 models. The vehicles are reportedly affected by a problem where transistors within a charging control unit may become damaged, potentially resulting in the 12-volt battery failing to charge and subsequently causing a loss of drive power.
Kia’s recall impacts almost 63,000 EV6 vehicles manufactured between 2022 and 2024. In response, car dealers are set to inspect the affected vehicles, replace the control unit and a fuse if necessary, and conduct a software update to rectify the issue. Notably, even owners whose vehicles were previously recalled this year for the same concern will need to return their vehicles to dealers for additional service.
Communication to car owners regarding the recall will commence with notification letters being sent in December and January. These steps are part of the manufacturers’ commitment to ensuring safety and reliability in their electric vehicle models.
