The Indian Institute of Technology Madras, or IIT Madras, has achieved a remarkable feat by ranking first in engineering for the ninth straight year. This prestigious recognition was announced during the release of the NIRF rankings on August 12, 2024, by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In this year’s rankings, IIT Madras maintained its top position, solidifying its reputation as one of the best education institutions in the country. Since 2016, it has been a consistent leader, with IIS Bengaluru also holding onto its top position in the universities and research category since 2016 and 2021, respectively.

Alongside IIT Madras, IIM Ahmedabad proudly retained its status as the top management institution for the fifth consecutive year. Minister Pradhan also hinted at exciting changes for the upcoming year, mentioning that the Ministry is considering adding «sustainability» as a new criterion for the rankings.

This year’s NIRF rankings saw a total of 16 categories, which is three more than last year’s, with new categories for Open universities, skill universities, and State public universities introduced. This effort seeks to acknowledge the varying levels of funding and support that different types of institutions receive.

In another significant development, Delhi University (DU) made a comeback into the top 10 universities in India, securing the 6th position. With a considerable rise in its overall ranking, moving up seven places since last year, DU is now recognized as the 15th best university overall.

Yogesh Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of DU, credited the success to the hard work and teamwork of the faculty and staff. He proudly announced that six of DU’s colleges secured places in the top 10 rankings, with Hindu College taking the lead, followed by Miranda House and St. Stephen's College.

Hindu College was ranked as the best college in the country, while Miranda House and St. Stephen’s College achieved second and third positions, respectively. DU’s Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College ranked fifth, and Kirori Mal College and Lady Shri Ram College for Women rounded out the top ten.

Singh expressed optimism about continuing this upward trend, stating, “We hope that next year we will achieve even better results,” showcasing a commitment to excellence in higher education at DU.
