India Criticizes Canada Over Pro-Khalistan Float in Malton
India has expressed strong criticism towards Canada after floats depicting pro-Khalistan sentiments were seen in Malton, Ontario. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated that democratic countries should not allow intimidation by radical elements under the guise of freedom of expression.
Jaiswal emphasized that the celebration and glorification of violence should not be condoned in any civilized society. India has raised concerns about violent imagery used by extremist groups in Canada, particularly targeting Indian political leadership.
The controversy stems from past incidents, including last year’s float at the Nagar Kirtan parade in Malton that depicted an assassination scenario involving Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in connection to Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s death.
India has reiterated worries regarding the security of its diplomatic representatives in Canada, urging the Canadian government to ensure their safety and prevent threats from radical elements. The Government of Canada was urged to stop providing shelter to criminal and secessionist elements within its borders.
Recently, Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, responded to the criticism, acknowledging that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was entitled to his opinion regarding the ongoing tensions between the two countries.
