India’s 2024 General Election Results: A Detailed Analysis of Key Upsets and Surprises
With the unveiling of the results of India’s 2024 general elections, the political landscape of the nation has witnessed significant shifts and unexpected outcomes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, secured 240 seats, falling short of the majority mark in the Lok Sabha. However, with allies, the BJP managed to secure a majority with a total of 283 seats.
Contrary to the 2019 results, where the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) clinched a total of 353 seats, the 2024 elections saw the opposition, primarily led by the Indian National Congress party, win 223 seats.
One of the most significant battlegrounds was Uttar Pradesh, a state crucial in determining the governance in New Delhi, with 80 parliamentary constituencies. In this election, the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress alliance managed to secure 43 seats against the BJP’s 33 seats.
Another notable upset was witnessed in West Bengal, a state where the All India Trinamool Congress party dominated with 29 seats compared to the BJP’s 12 seats, contrary to initial predictions of a major win for the BJP.
In the southern state of Kerala, the BJP claimed its first Lok Sabha parliamentarian seat through Suresh Gopi, showcasing a shift in the party’s strategy to attract voters from various communities.
Maharashtra also held surprises, with the INDIA alliance securing 30 seats, where the Congress alone won 13 seats, outperforming earlier exit polls projections.
The variance in results from Karnataka saw the BJP emerging as the top winner with 17 seats, yet showcasing a slight erosion in its base, with the Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) party winning a combined 12 seats.
