In a nail-biting finish at the R Premadasa stadium in Colombo, India faced Sri Lanka in the first ODI of their three-match series. The match ended in a dramatic tie on August 2, 2024, with India all out and failing to score the winning run they needed.

Sri Lanka batted first after winning the toss and set a target of 231 runs. They posted a total of 230 runs for 8 wickets, thanks to solid performances from Dunith Wellalage, who scored 67 not out, and Pathum Nissanka, who contributed 56 runs.

India started their chase strongly with captain Rohit Sharma‘s quick 58 off 47 balls. However, after him, the batting lineup struggled significantly against the Sri Lankan bowlers, with Axar Patel and KL Rahul adding 33 and 31 runs, respectively.

The wicket-takers from Sri Lanka were led by Wanindu Hasaranga and Charith Asalanka, who each bagged three wickets. Dunith Wellalage also played a pivotal role, taking two wickets, while Asitha Fernando and Akila Dananjaya chipped in with one wicket each.

The match reached a gripping climax with India needing just one run off the final two deliveries. But as pressure mounted, they lost two wickets in quick succession. First, Shivam Dube was dismissed LBW by Charith Asalanka, and then Arshdeep Singh was caught out, resulting in the match ending in a tie.

The next ODI is set to take place on Sunday at the same venue, making it a highly anticipated rematch between the teams.
