Indian 2: Kamal Haasan Starrer Overcomes Criticism with Strong Opening Day Box Office Collection
Indian 2, the much-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster Indian, directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan, has made an impressive start at the box office despite facing mixed reviews.
The film, which opened on July 12, managed to collect a total of ₹25.6 crore on its first day in India. This includes ₹16.5 crore from the Tamil market, ₹7.9 crore from Telugu regions, and ₹1.2 crore from the Hindi-speaking audience.
Indian 2 marked the comeback of director Shankar following an 18-year hiatus from the original film. The sequel features Kamal Haasan in the role of the iconic vigilante ‘Indian Thatha,’ known for his fight against corruption using the ancient Indian martial art form, ‘varma kalai.’
Anirudh has composed the music for the sequel, taking over from the legendary A R Rahman who scored the music for the original Indian film. The movie is a joint production of Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies.
The star-studded cast includes Siddharth, S J Suryah, Bobby Simha, Gulshan Grover, and the late Nedumudi Venu. The film also features Kamal Haasan sharing the screen with actors like Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai in previous collaborations with director Shankar.
Prior to its release, the makers of Indian 2 faced challenges in Tamil Nadu regarding the timing of the first show. Despite the hurdles, the film managed to secure a strong opening with special shows in the early morning hours.
Indian 2 competes with other recent releases like Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin and starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone, that have dominated the Indian box office in recent weeks.
Interestingly, Kamal Haasan’s role in Indian 2 as Supreme Yaskin has garnered attention for his performance in the few scenes he features in, hinting at a more significant role in the sequel.
With the film’s success on the opening day, Indian 2 has proven to be a strong contender in the entertainment industry, opening parallel to the ongoing Amazon Summer Sale that offers discounts on various products. News related to the film’s box office progress can be obtained from Hindustan Times.
