After finishing his work shift at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday of May last year, Eddy Stieren jokingly mentioned to his long-time girlfriend Carrie Stobaugh that the only way he’d have a day off for the Kentucky Derby would be if he ‘either died or got married.’
Little did they know, that joke would turn into reality. This past weekend, amidst a vibrant crowd of 156,710 Derby spectators at Churchill Downs, Eddy and Carrie exchanged vows in a unique infield wedding ceremony.
Their love story has always been entwined with Derby season, from their initial meeting at a party in 2012 to Eddy’s romantic proposal at the Travers Stakes last August.
Being ardent horse racing enthusiasts, the decision to have their wedding at Churchill Downs felt like a natural choice for the couple. With Stobaugh’s excitement evident, she shared that she immediately loved Eddy’s idea and felt it truly reflected their shared passion for horse racing.
Both natives of Louisville, with Stobaugh having attended Holy Rosary Academy and Stieren a graduate of Butler Traditional High School, the Derby holds a special place in their hearts with cherished memories from past races they’ve attended.
Stieren recalls his childhood fascination with horse racing, mentioning an instance where he turned $25 into $400 at the Kentucky Oaks at the age of 8. Stobaugh, on the other hand, fondly remembers the electrifying atmosphere of the 2018 Preakness Stakes, particularly the unexpected downpour on the crowd during the event.
Dressed in a white dress and a matching fascinator from a boutique in Indiana, Stobaugh radiated elegance while Stieren sported a purple outfit with a red rose on his lapel. Their ceremony against the iconic backdrop of the twin spires was a moment they will cherish forever.
Although their wedding venue may not be traditional, with a larger reception planned at the German American Club next month, the couple’s love for each other and for the Derby shines through.
Eddy, a seasoned Derby attendee with around 15 visits to the event, expressed his delight at finally experiencing the races without work responsibilities, embracing the festivities alongside his now-wife Carrie.
The couple’s dynamic at the racetrack complements each other perfectly, with Stobaugh emphasizing the familial aspect of the event while Stieren approaches it with a mix of strategic betting and enjoyment.
As they embark on this new chapter of their lives together, Eddy and Carrie remain a testament to the enduring charm and magic of the Kentucky Derby, where their love story continues to blossom.
