The UK’s chief plant health officer is urging vigilance as invasive species, including Asian Hornets, are on the rise in the country.

Nicola Spence highlights the threat posed to local ecosystems by Asian Hornets, with a surge in sightings recorded primarily in Kent.

Last year, the Animal and Plant Health Agency’s National Bee Unit destroyed 72 Asian Hornets nests across 56 locations, emphasizing the need for continued public awareness.

Defra has also identified other problematic non-native species like Japanese Knotweed, Giant Hogweed, and Himalayan Balsam, which can cause environmental and structural damage.

Furthermore, existing invasive species like the Red Imported Fire Ant, Chinese Mitten Crab, and Chinese Mystery Snail are spreading across Europe, raising concerns for the UK.

The Wildlife and Countryside Link, led by Richard Benwell, has called for increased government action to address the invasive species crisis.

Several nature organizations, including River Trust, Plantlife, and Buglife, are advocating for a biosecurity initiative to combat the spread of these non-native threats.

Dr. Rob Collins from The Rivers Trust emphasizes the need for robust government support to manage the invasive species threatening UK waterways.

In response, Defra has pledged continued commitment to the Invasive Non-Native Species Strategy, encouraging public reporting through resources like the Invasive Species Watch.
