Jagannath Rath Yatra 2024 Kicks Off with Pomp and Splendor in Puri
The annual Jagannath Rath Yatra, a renowned Hindu festival, commenced in Puri, Odisha on the auspicious occasion of Ashadha month’s shukla paksha dwitiya. This grand parade, known worldwide for its spiritual significance, attracts thousands of devotees from various corners each year.
This year, the Rath Yatra is set to begin on July 7th, 2024, with the honorable President of India joining in to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath. According to tradition, witnessing the divine procession is believed to be equivalent to the merit gained from performing a thousand yagnas.
Skanda Purana details the origins of the Jagannath Rath Yatra festival, tracing it back to the 12th to 16th centuries. Various myths and beliefs surround its inception, linking it to Lord Krishna’s maternal hometown and King Indradyumna’s divine inspiration.
Legend has it that the Rath Yatra represents Lord Krishna’s journey to explore the city with His siblings, Balaram and Subhadra. As the chariots move towards the Jagannath Temple in Puri, Balaram’s, Subhadra’s, and Jagannath’s conveyances lead the way, signifying their significant roles.
The Skanda Purana also accounts for a compelling story where Lord Krishna dodged Kansa’s evil schemes by embarking on a rath journey to Mathura. This event is honored yearly through the Rath Yatra procession.
The Jagannath Temple in Puri holds a unique distinction among the four sacred sites in India, where Jagannath, Balaram, and Subhadra are enshrined together. The establishment of the temple is associated with mystical events, divine dreams, and the craftsmanship of Lord Vishwakarma, adding to its sanctity.
As the Rath Yatra unfolds, the Skanda Purana prophesies the Niladri Vijaya ritual, symbolizing the return of Lord Jagannath to the Jagannath Temple post the scenic procession. Uddhav Thackeray, the Chief Minister, backed by the Supreme Court, ensures the smooth conduct of the festivities.
