Jailed Sikh Leader Amritpal Singh Leads in Punjab’s Khadoor Sahib Seat
Jailed Sikh leader Amritpal Singh is currently leading in Punjab‘s Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency amidst the ongoing 2024 elections, with a substantial margin over his closest competitor.
Amritpal Singh, who heads the ‘Waris Punjab De‘ organization, is contesting as an Independent candidate from Khadoor Sahib, where he’s pitted against Congress‘ Kulbir Singh Zira, AAP‘s Laljit Singh Bhullar, and Shiromani Akali Dal‘s Harpal Singh Baler.
The constituency, a part of Tarn Taran district in Punjab, has nine assembly seats and was established post the 2008 delimitation.
Amritpal Singh, currently incarcerated under the National Security Act in Dibrugarh, Assam since April 2023, remains a prominent figure in the electoral race, with support pouring in from across Punjab, coordinated by his father Tarsem Singh and local backers.
His election symbol is a ‘Microphone,’ and his campaign has revolved around the release of ‘Bandi Singhs’ and a pledge to combat the drug menace in Punjab.
Another notable Independent candidate in Punjab is Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, running from the Faridkot constituency, who has been granted the poll symbol ‘Ganna Kisan’ and is connected to the legacy of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Khadoor Sahib constituency witnessed a voter turnout of 63.96%, wherein Congress’ Jasbir Singh Gill emerged victorious with a significant margin.
