Jake Paul Defeats Mike Tyson in Unprecedented Eight-Round Match
The much-anticipated boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson concluded with Paul defeating Tyson by unanimous decision in an eight-round heavyweight bout held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The match, which took place on Friday, saw all three judges score the fight in favor of Paul, with scores of 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73.
The fight was marked by several unusual regulations, including two-minute rounds and the use of 14-ounce gloves instead of the standard 10-ounce gloves typically used in heavyweight fights. These modifications were sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
Mike Tyson, at the age of 58, returned to the ring for what was billed as one of the biggest boxing matches in recent memory. The fight had initially been scheduled for July 20 but had to be postponed to November due to medical issues faced by Tyson during a flight in May, which included an ulcer flare-up.
Tyson, who has a record of 50 wins, 7 losses, and 44 knockouts, made history as the youngest heavyweight champion at the age of 20 in 1986. He later unified all three major belts to become the undisputed champion, maintaining six defenses until his stunning 10th-round knockout loss to James «Buster» Douglas in February 1990.
Jake Paul, a 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer, entered the professional boxing scene in 2020 and has quickly made a name for himself with an 11-1 record and 7 knockouts. Paul’s rise in the sport included six consecutive victories mostly against former MMA fighters. Despite experiencing a loss in February 2023, Paul has since secured five straight wins, including the latest decision over Tyson.
The event was exclusively available on Netflix, marking a new territory for the streaming service in sports broadcasting. Previews and pre-event fights were available for free on other platforms, but the main event required a Netflix subscription.
