The Braintree constituency has re-elected James Cleverly to represent them in Parliament, securing a victory for the Conservative Party.
Cleverly, the former Secretary of State for the Home Department, garnered 17,414 votes, outperforming his closest rival Matthew Wright of the Labour Party who received 13,744 votes.
Trailing behind were Reform UK candidate Richard Thomson with 11,436 votes, Liberal Democrat’s Kieron Franks with 2,879 votes, Green Party’s Paul Thorogood with 2,878 votes, and independent candidate David Heather with 767 votes.
The election results were announced at Tabor Academy, London, with Cleverly addressing his supporters shortly after the victory.
In his acceptance speech, Cleverly expressed his gratitude to the people of Braintree for entrusting him once again with the role of their representative and champion in Westminster.
He thanked his campaign team and acknowledged the other candidates for a well-fought campaign, highlighting the positive nature of the political discourse in Braintree.
Cleverly emphasized the importance of the local community, describing Braintree as a place populated by wonderful individuals.
As the news of his victory circulated, Cleverly’s re-election came amidst a larger political landscape shift, notably with the Labour Party making gains nationally, as Sir Keir Starmer prepares to assume the role of Prime Minister from his conservative counterpart, Rishi Sunak.
