James Maddison and Tottenham Midfielder Left Out of England’s Final Euro 2024 Squad
Midfielder James Maddison and a Tottenham player have been excluded from England’s 26-man squad for the upcoming European Championship in Germany, according to sources familiar with the situation.
These decision marks the initial exclusions from a total of seven players that manager Gareth Southgate will trim from the provisional 33-man squad prior to UEFA’s Friday deadline for submissions.
Sources close to the situation have indicated that another player from Tottenham is also expected to be among those left out from the final Euro 2024 squad.
James Maddison, 27, made a cameo appearance during England’s recent 3-0 friendly victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina at St. James' Park. Although he was part of England’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he did not feature in any matches.
During the Euro 2024 qualifiers in November, Maddison had to withdraw due to an ankle injury sustained in Tottenham’s 4-1 loss to London rivals. Since joining Tottenham from Leicester City in June, Maddison has scored three goals and provided five assists in 11 appearances.
However, the midfielder has struggled to replicate his early-season form following his return from injury at the end of January. His only goal since then came in a match against another London club on March 10.
England is set to face Iceland at Wembley on Friday, with a final decision on the 26-man squad expected to be made before midnight CET. The national team’s Euro 2024 campaign will kick off against Serbia on June 16, followed by matches against Slovenia and Denmark in the group stage.
