Jay Shah Elected Unopposed as Next ICC Chair
Jay Shah has been elected unopposed as the next Independent Chair of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This prestigious role will be assumed on December 1, 2024. Shah’s election comes after current Chair Greg Barclay decided not to seek a third term, leaving Shah as the sole nominee for the position.
In his statement following the election, Jay Shah expressed his commitment to advancing the global reach and popularity of cricket, especially with the sport’s upcoming inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. He views this as a pivotal opportunity for the growth of cricket on a broader scale.
“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” stated Shah. “I am dedicated to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where the coexistence of multiple formats and the promotion of advanced technologies are essential for introducing marquee events to new global markets.”
Additionally, Shah emphasized the importance of inclusivity and innovation in the sport: “While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide.” He is particularly optimistic about how the Olympic inclusion will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways.
Shah’s election marks a significant transition for the ICC as it aims to expand the game’s reach and continue its evolution on the global stage. His past roles include serving as the BCCI Honorary Secretary since October 2019 and as Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since January 2021.
