WEST POINT, N.Y. — Jeff Monken, the head coach of Army’s football team, is at the helm of unexpected success this season, leading the Black Knights to an undefeated run and national ranking. Based in a room decorated with his daughters’ drawings and mementos from generals, Monken reflects on his role and obligation as a coach at the United States Military Academy.

«I could argue that I’m having more of an impact on people here than I could have anywhere else,» Monken stated, discussing the broader responsibilities his cadets face post-football. Despite the team’s current accomplishments, Monken yearns to compete for a national championship, something he admits might be challenging within an academy setting.

The Army football program has seen a significant transformation since Monken’s arrival in 2013. At that time, the team had suffered through years of poor performance, including a period without the Secretary’s Trophy and being largely irrelevant in modern football. Under Monken, however, the Black Knights have not only become competitive but are also changing the dynamics within the American Athletic Conference (AAC).

A reconstruction project valued at $170 million is underway at Michie Stadium, reflecting the growing ambitions of the team. The Black Knights will face No. 6 Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium in a much-anticipated clash, highlighting the team’s ascent in college football.

Monken has revitalized the program with intense discipline and attention to detail, traits that have helped cultivate a culture of resilience and excellence among the players. This evolution was not easy; it included challenging early practices and restructuring of the team’s approach, leading them to the current unbeaten status.

Army’s success has coincided with a challenging period for the AAC. Five conference teams have recently dismissed their head coaches, struggling to meet expectations in a tumultuous football landscape further reshaped by Monken’s influence.

While the Black Knights have yet to compete against Tulane and Memphis in the regular season, their presence in the conference has created a unique identity marked by their offensive strategy and disciplined game-play. The Black Knights sit at 9-0, aiming to secure the AAC title in a game against Tulane on December 6.

Monken remains a subject of interest for higher-profile coaching positions, but his commitment to West Point and the unique culture at the academy continue to define his career. «Where he is,» said Paul Johnson, former coach and Monken’s mentor, «is a really good fit for him.» The challenges at Army are distinct, yet Monken’s adaptability and leadership are evident, reflecting the values of discipline and persistence that align with the institution’s core mission.
