Jillian Barberie’s Tumultuous Journey: From TV Stardom to Battling Cancer and Financial Struggles
Jillian Barberie, a former superstar of television in Southern California, has faced remarkable challenges after a prosperous career. Once the star of FOX 11‘s «Good Day LA,» Barberie encountered life-altering obstacles—including a divorce, a battle with cancer, and financial hurdles—after her tenure with the top-rated morning show came to an end in 2012 due to a program revamp.
Barberie was candid about her initial fears when her role as the family’s breadwinner was disrupted. «People would say ‘Oh, they’ll never get rid of you,'» she recounted. «But when it happened, I had a husband who did not work and a baby in diapers.» She admitted that she had moments of despair, wondering, «What happened to my life?»
In 2018, Barberie’s yearly mammogram detected a mass in her breast, which was swiftly diagnosed as cancerous. «I’m aggressive,» Barberie remarked regarding her approach to treatment, which included a double mastectomy, radiation, and chemotherapy. Despite the severity of her condition, she maintained a positive outlook, encouraged by her oncologist’s advice that «a good attitude is half the battle.»
Her ordeal was compounded by severe financial strain. Unexpectedly, Barberie discovered that her television success had not translated into financial security. The impact of her divorce and cancer treatment costs had drained her resources, leading to deep depression. «I remember hoping the cancer would come back,» she said in a moment of vulnerability, struggling to cope with her financial circumstances.
Throughout these trials, Barberie relied heavily on her social media followers for support. She was transparent about her struggles online, and her followers responded with empathy and material support. «They would send me groceries — that’s how bad things were,» she shared. Barberie credits both this community and Melanie Lekkos, a wellness expert in Malibu, for helping her regain some stability and improve her health.
Working with Lekkos, Barberie lost over 40 pounds with dietary adjustments and GLP-1 injections, aiding her recovery. Though persistent leg pain occasionally hinders her, she remains optimistic about her progress. Barberie expressed gratitude for her journey, stating, «I’ve lost everything to gain everything. I live in an apartment now… and I’m so much happier.»
Barberie, now five years cancer-free, intends to use her experiences to help other women facing similar challenges. «It’s a struggle, but when you get to the other side, life is good again,» she reflected.
