Jimmy Garoppolo’s Impact on Los Angeles Rams’ Defense Through Scout Team Role

Veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, although yet to see action this season, is having a significant influence on the Los Angeles Rams. His presence is particularly noted in the development of the team’s defense. The Rams’ head coach, Sean McVay, has discussed Garoppolo’s influential role with the Rams Media Center.

“I just think it’s the ability for him (Garoppolo) to activate the parts of the field and make quick decisions,” McVay remarked. “He has such a command too. Sometimes you get some of these younger quarterbacks and they’re not quite as comfortable taking command of the huddle. Even if you just hear the way that he communicates with the guys around him, you can’t help but get better because our defense is seeing a look that’s very much reflective of high-level starting caliber quarterback play with the things that he can do.”

McVay further highlighted the impact Garoppolo has on his teammates. “He has a great way about himself. He has definitely made them better by the way that he handles himself on the field, the looks that he’s able to present them, in terms of just mimicking and imitating the opposing team’s quarterback, and then I think he’s also made the players that he’s around better by the way he communicates to them,» he explained.

This season, the Rams are relying on their scout team, which typically involves players from the practice squad, to emulate the style of play of their upcoming opponents. As they prepare for their Week 12 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles, Garoppolo has been integral in mimicking the Eagles’ run-heavy offense. This preparation is crucial for the Rams, who have shown a need for defensive improvement despite their recent successes.

The Rams have been on an upward trajectory recently, winning four out of their last five games and currently holding a .500 record. Their defense demonstrated potential by limiting the Miami Dolphins, noted as the 11th-best team in rushing, to just 67 yards on 3.0 yards per carry. The Philadelphia Eagles present a different challenge, yet the Rams are anticipated to compete vigorously.
