Joe Davis, the Los Angeles Dodgers‘ play-by-play announcer, recently shared his experience of calling one of the most memorable moments in the 2024 World Series. During the 10th inning of Game 1, Dodgers’ first baseman Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam, a highlight that Davis describes as a «once-in-a-lifetime moment.»

Speaking about the event, Davis said, «That was special. No matter what team is delivering that moment, that’s going to be special.» He expressed his childhood dream of being the voice of the World Series and the thrill of witnessing such a historic moment. «Not only is it the World Series, we’re talking an all-time World Series-moment right there. That’s what you dream of,» he added.

Davis’ call paid homage to a similar iconic event in World Series history when Kirk Gibson hit a walk-off homer in Game 1 of the 1988 series. «Freeman, hits a ball to right field — she is … goooone! Gibby, meet Freddie! Game 1 of the World Series!» Davis exclaimed during the broadcast.

Being the Dodgers’ full-time voice during the regular season made this moment especially significant for Davis. However, this dual role drew some criticism from opposing fans who felt it was unfair for the Dodgers to retain their regional announcer while others did not. Davis addressed this, saying, «Fandom is blinding, especially that time of year, and that’s great. That’s what makes fandom in sports amazing. So I totally get it, I would have been the same way as a kid watching my team, getting upset at the announcers. It comes with the territory.»

Davis reflected on the broader implications of his work during the World Series, stating, «I hope that nobody left thinking I wasn’t good at my job or didn’t work hard to get ready for the games.» He revealed a private process of self-evaluation, saying, «I’ve definitely gone back and picked it apart, probably more than is healthy.»

The grand slam moment remains a standout in Davis’s career. «I can’t wrap my head around how big of a moment that was for me,» he admitted. When asked how this ranks among all-time World Series moments, Davis confidently places it within the top five, though he admits it hasn’t entirely sunk in. «I say it, but it doesn’t hit me right,» he said, «I think it will with a little more time having passed.»
