Joe Root’s Record Century Leads England’s Dominance Against Sri Lanka in Second Test
In a remarkable display of batting prowess, Joe Root scored his record-equalling 33rd Test century, propelling England to a strong position on the first day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Lord's on Thursday.
England, having been reduced to 42-2 early in their innings, managed to finish the day at a formidable total of 358-7. Root’s exceptional innings of 143 came off 206 balls, marking his sixth century at the iconic ‘Home of Cricket’.
Alongside Root, pacer Gus Atkinson also made significant contributions to the team’s score, remaining unbeaten on 74 at the end of the day. This was Atkinson’s maiden Test fifty, achieved in just his fifth match at this level.
The match witnessed a commendable performance by England’s batting lineup, which saw several players making solid starts, including Ben Duckett and Harry Brook. The lower order also provided valuable support, enabling the hosts to reach a substantial score.
Sri Lanka’s bowling attack was led by Asitha Fernando, who achieved a remarkable five-wicket haul during the innings. Other bowlers, including Milan Rathnayake and Lahiru Kumara, contributed by taking two wickets each, while Prabath Jayasuriya managed to take one.
