Jordi Fernandez Lauds Ben Simmons’ Aggressive Play in Nets’ Tense Victory
This was the aggressiveness that Jordi Fernandez wanted, and the Brooklyn Nets desperately needed. Ben Simmons, previously lacking in assertiveness, delivered a standout performance as the Nets secured a narrow victory. The game was marked by significant moments, especially given the absence of Cam Thomas, the team’s leading scorer, who sat out due to lower back tightness.
In a crucial moment in the fourth quarter, Simmons re-entered the game and quickly made his presence felt. After Jalen Wilson had his shot blocked, Simmons seized possession and converted a basket. His impact continued as Shake Milton executed an alley-oop to Simmons in the ensuing sequence. These plays temporarily pushed the Nets into a four-point lead, although the game remained undecided until Charlotte Hornets’ Brandon Miller‘s last-second attempt fell short at Barclays Center.
Simmons concluded the night with 10 points, eight rebounds, and five assists, hitting a season-high with his five baskets. «He was big-time tonight,» remarked Trendon Watford, reflecting the general sentiment around Simmons’ performance.
Having been benched and averaging a career-low 5.3 points per game, Simmons had seen his lowest numbers since his peak season of 16.9 points with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018-2019. Recently, he has been serving as an out-of-position center following Nic Claxton‘s absence due to injury, making his contribution all the more noteworthy.
Fernandez also commended Simmons for his physicality during a brief altercation in the third quarter. A tough screen against Josh Green led to tensions flaring, with Brandon Miller shoving Simmons, which resulted in technical fouls for both players.
«I think Ben was a huge part of this win,» said Fernandez, reflecting on the game. «I really liked how he played, how engaged he was, his communication at all times. It’s just great to see him play like this.» His comments highlight the potential Simmons has when displaying such gameplay.
The match also featured strategic decisions from the Nets, especially during the closing moments. Fernandez explained, «At the end of the day, they gotta own it. They’re the ones playing. I’m not out there.» The coach relayed his trust in the players to manage critical situations, such as deciding whether or not to foul in the final seconds.
Trendon Watford, recently back from a hamstring injury that caused him to miss the first 12 games, made a significant return with 10 points in 19 minutes of play. Additional player updates included Dorian Finney-Smith and Ziaire Williams returning from injuries, with Wilson making his first start of the season due to Thomas’ absence.
The Nets’ first home game of this year’s NBA Cup was also praised by Fernandez who expressed enthusiasm for the new tournament format and the revamped court at Barclays Center.
