Judy Murray Clarifies Sarcastic Remark on Emma Raducanu’s Withdrawal from Wimbledon
Judy Murray, mother of tennis star Andy Murray, has clarified her recent controversial remark regarding Emma Raducanu‘s withdrawal from Wimbledon. Raducanu, the rising British tennis sensation, decided to pull out of the mixed doubles match with Andy Murray due to wrist stiffness.
The situation sparked a reaction from Murray, who responded to a post by broadcaster Marcus Buckland, labelling Raducanu’s withdrawal as ‘astonishing’. However, Murray later explained that her comment was meant sarcastically.
Raducanu’s decision to withdraw was based on prioritizing her health, especially with a challenging singles match against Lulu Sun coming up. Having undergone wrist surgeries in the past, Raducanu did not want to risk further injury by pushing herself.
Furthermore, eyebrows were raised over the scheduling of Raducanu and Andy Murray’s match at Wimbledon. Initially set to play earlier, the duo ended up being placed as the fourth match on the schedule, affecting their recovery time.
In an interesting parallel, the situation drew comparisons to John McEnroe‘s past experience at Wimbledon when Steffi Graf retired from their mixed doubles match to focus on singles play the next day.
Despite the mixed doubles withdrawal, Andy Murray’s Wimbledon farewell was heartwarming, including a tribute from tennis greats like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Venus Williams.
