Julianne Hough recently got real about her breakup with former NHL player Brooks Laich during an episode of the Armchair Expert podcast. Hough, 36, shared her feelings about their split and reflected on the challenges they faced while they were married.

She started by praising Laich, saying, «He’s got the greatest heart that I could ever have the privilege of being with.» Their relationship went through tough times, especially since they got married in 2017, which coincided with a rough patch in Laich’s hockey career.

During her heartfelt discussion with podcast host Dax Shepard, Hough revealed how Laich was injured and traded just before his long-time team finally won the Stanley Cup. «It makes me want to cry because I feel for him so bad,» she admitted, clearly still feeling the weight of their past together.

Despite the love they shared, Hough stated that 2017 was also when things began to unravel between them. She expressed some regret but emphasized that both she and Laich have accepted how their relationship turned out.

Hough explained her feelings of sadness surrounding their separation, which she initially requested in September 2019. Shortly after, she faced the loss of her pets, calling it “very tragic.” This period represented a major change in her life and emotional turmoil.

Reflecting on her journey, Hough said she felt as if she “blew up” her life, but she’s now choosing to approach her new chapter intentionally. «I actually get to start in an intentional way that I get to design and create a life that is actually coming from my soul,» she said, signifying a hopeful outlook moving forward.
