Jury Recommends Death Penalty for Wade Wilson in Double Murder Case
The jury in the double murder case involving Kristine Melton and Diane Ruiz has recommended the death penalty for Wade Wilson, the convicted murderer. The decision, not unanimous, came swiftly after less than two hours of deliberation in Lee County.
Under the new Florida law, which requires only eight out of twelve jurors to recommend death for it to be considered, the jury voted 9-to-3 in favor of the death penalty for the murder of Kristine Melton and 10-to-2 for the slaying of Diane Ruiz.
Despite the jury’s recommendation, the final decision on Wilson’s penalty lies in the hands of Judge Nick Thompson, who will preside over the Spencer hearing scheduled for July 23. This hearing will involve further arguments and witness statements before a final decision is made.
Assistant State Attorney Sara Miller expressed relief at the jury’s decision, emphasizing the heinous nature of the crimes. Miller highlighted the importance of the verdict in ensuring justice for the victims and the safety of potential future victims of the defendant.
Prior to the recommendation, emotional testimonies from the families of Melton and Ruiz, alongside medical inputs, played a crucial role in the jury’s deliberation. Miller presented compelling evidence during closing arguments, emphasizing the brutality and callousness of the murders.
