Kambosos urged to consider retirement after Lomachenko fight
Following his defeat to Vasiliy Lomachenko in the recent bout, Australian boxer George Kambosos is being advised to take a step back from the sport and contemplate retirement.
Kambosos’ promoter, Lou DiBella, acknowledged the need for at least one fight before considering a rematch with Teofimo Lopez, emphasizing that it wouldn’t involve Liam Wilson despite the latter’s interest in facing Kambosos.
Lomachenko’s victory over Kambosos ended the Australian’s quest for the IBF lightweight crown, marking his third loss in four title contests.
In a post-fight interview, DiBella mentioned the possibility of a rematch with Lopez, with the condition that Kambosos proves himself as an elite contender against Lomachenko.
DiBella suggested that if Kambosos returns, it would likely be in a different weight class, as Lopez has moved to the WBO super lightweight division.
The promoter highlighted the significance of Kambosos taking time off to reflect on his future in the sport, especially after experiencing defeat and a first-time knockout.
Regarding the potential rematch with Lopez, DiBella stressed the need for an intermediate fight, potentially at 140 pounds.
DiBella dismissed the idea of a domestic showdown with Wilson, stating that such a bout would lack global interest and economic sensibility.
He pointed out that the past Kambosos events in Australia involved collaborations with Top Rank and ESPN, indicating the importance of fights with international appeal.
DiBella addressed Kambosos’ mention of a disruptive blow behind the ear during the fight, clarifying that it was a legal punch, albeit affecting Kambosos’ equilibrium.
Overall, the focus remains on Kambosos’ future decisions and potential career choices following his defeat to Lomachenko.
