Kevin Costner Reflects On Friendship With Whitney Houston And Emotional Eulogy

Kevin Costner has recently shared heartfelt reflections on his enduring friendship with the late legendary singer Whitney Houston, more than three decades after their iconic collaboration in the film, «The Bodyguard

Costner, who not only starred in but also produced the acclaimed 1992 movie, revealed details about his bond with Houston during an episode of the ‘Armchair Expert’ podcast.

The actor recounted how he first saw Houston on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show‘ and was determined to cast her in ‘The Bodyguard,’ a romantic thriller centered around a singer who falls in love with her security guard.

Despite opposition from the film’s director Mick Johnson, Costner stood firm in his decision to cast Houston, emphasizing that she was his choice for the role.

Costner recalled a pivotal moment where he promised Houston a supportive environment on set despite not allowing her entourage, establishing a trusting and collaborative dynamic between them.

The film’s immense success, grossing nearly $122 million at the box office, was further amplified by Houston’s powerful rendition of Dolly Parton‘s ‘I Will Always Love You,’ earning her a Grammy for Record of the Year.

Following Houston’s tragic passing at the age of 48 from accidental drowning at the Beverly Hilton, Costner was approached by her aunt, renowned singer Dionne Warwick, to deliver a eulogy at the memorial service.

Despite initial hesitations, Costner crafted a deeply emotional speech, standing by his decision not to shorten it despite external pressures to keep remarks brief due to commercial breaks during the televised event.

Reflecting on the moment, Costner expressed his conviction in delivering a 17-minute eulogy as a tribute to his dear friend, ensuring he conveyed everything he felt needed to be said.

Caitlin O’Kane, a senior manager of content and production at CBS News who contributes to a variety of topics and hosts ‘The Uplift‘ streaming show, reported on Costner’s poignant recollections of his enduring friendship with Whitney Houston.

Her work reaches a global audience through platforms like Chrome, Safari, and other media outlets.
