Kevin Feige Teases Future for ‘Eternals’ and ‘Inhumans’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, recently hinted at potential future developments for two of Marvel’s lesser-known superhero teams, the «Eternals» and «Inhumans,» despite their struggles with popularity and reception. In a recent interview, Feige expressed optimism about the future of these underdogs, teasing that exciting plans could boost their standing in Marvel’s expansive universe.
Marvel’s «Eternals,» which was released in 2021, marked a rare misstep for the usually well-received Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite featuring a star-studded cast that included Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington, and Barry Keoghan, the film failed to impress critics, earning a «rotten» rating on Rotten Tomatoes. At the box office, it grossed $164.9 million domestically, making it the second-lowest performing MCU installment in the U.S, just above «The Incredible Hulk,» which grossed $134 million.
Nevertheless, the film generated some buzz for a potential sequel, particularly following its post-credits scene that hinted at an impending cosmic threat. Yet, hopes were seemingly diminished when Kit Harington, who played Dane Whitman, suggested that discussions for a follow-up had stalled. Feige, however, remained noncommittal about the future, expressing pride in the film’s cast and declaring, «We’d be lucky to get any of them back at some point.» He also hinted that the characters from «Eternals» might appear in other MCU projects, possibly in an animated series like «Marvel Zombies.»
The «Inhumans» have also had a tumultuous tenure in the Marvel Universe. Initially launched as a television series on ABC, «Inhumans» received poor reviews and failed to garner a substantial audience. The reception led to Marvel distancing itself from the property, leaving fans uncertain about its future. However, a brief appearance by Anson Mount‘s Black Bolt in «Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness» rekindled hope for the «Inhumans,» suggesting Marvel may be contemplating their reintroduction to the MCU.
Feige’s remarks about both properties have fueled speculation that the «Eternals» and «Inhumans» could see a resurgence within upcoming Marvel projects, such as the next «Avengers» films. The suggestion remains that while standalone sequels may not be on the immediate horizon, these characters are far from being written out of Marvel’s future plans.
«Eternals» follows a group of cosmic heroes tasked with protecting Earth from the Deviants, a monstrous race thought to have been erased from existence. «Inhumans» centers on Black Bolt and the Inhuman Royal Family, who are descendants of a superhuman race created by the Kree aliens.
