Key BJD Aide VK Pandian Resigns from Active Politics Following Party’s Defeat in Odisha Elections
After the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) faced a significant defeat in the recent Odisha elections, one of Naveen Patnaik‘s closest aides, former bureaucrat V.K. Pandian, announced his decision to withdraw from active political involvement. The party’s unexpected loss prompted Pandian to release a heartfelt video message on June 9.
In the video, Pandian expressed regret for any harm caused during his political journey and acknowledged his role in the BJD’s electoral setback. Despite not contesting in the elections himself, Pandian’s aim was to support Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, whose vision he had been dedicated to realizing.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged victorious in the Odisha Assembly with 78 seats, overshadowing the BJD’s 51 seats. The BJP’s sweeping success, including in Lok Sabha polls, highlighted the challenges faced by the BJD.
Pandian had been the subject of criticism following the party’s defeats, with speculation surrounding his influence and impact on the BJD’s performance. In response, Naveen Patnaik defended Pandian, emphasizing his contributions during major crises like cyclones and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the criticism, Patnaik expressed disappointment over the negative narrative surrounding Pandian, labeling it as unfortunate. He refuted claims of Pandian being a potential successor, stating that the people of Odisha would determine his heir within the party.
Pandian’s decision to step back from active politics underscored his initial motivation to assist and support Naveen Patnaik, placing the welfare of Odisha at the forefront of his efforts. The parting message concluded with Pandian’s gratitude to the entire Biju Parivaar, signifying his continued dedication to Odisha’s prosperity and his mentor, Naveen Babu.
