The much-loved anthem ‘Mr Brightside‘ by The Killers has surpassed Oasis‘s iconic ‘Wonderwall’ to become the UK‘s biggest single to have never reached the coveted number one spot.
The enduring charm of ‘Mr Brightside’, a staple at social gatherings, has seen it thrive for over two decades, with impressive figures of 1.066m in sales and over 530 million streams within the UK alone, as reported by the Official Charts Company.
Originally released in 2003 on a limited run of 500 CDs under the indie label Lizard King, ‘Mr Brightside’ gained new momentum when The Killers achieved commercial success with their hit ‘Somebody Told Me’, propelling the song to a respectable number 10 position.
Frontman Brandon Flowers, reminiscing on the song’s journey, expressed how the track has taken a life of its own in the music sphere, capturing the hearts of listeners globally.
Written as a response to Oasis’s ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, ‘Mr Brightside’ narrates a tale of heartbreak and resilience, fuelled by Flowers’ personal experiences and romantic reflections.
The Killers are gearing up for their Rebel Diamonds tour across the UK, set to kick off in June, showcasing their illustrious music catalogue that includes the chart-topping ‘Hot Fuss’ album.
