Kirstie Allsopp Faces Investigation After Allowing Son to Travel
Kirstie Allsopp, a well-known television presenter, has recently opened up about a disturbing experience she faced when a social worker contacted her regarding her teenage son.
Allsopp revealed that she permitted her then 15-year-old son, Oscar, to go on an Interrailing trip across Europe with a 16-year-old friend following his GCSE examinations. The presenter shared her story on Instagram, expressing shock at the concerns raised that led to the involvement of social services.
According to Allsopp, after posting about her son’s travel plans online, she was informed by a social worker from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC) that a file had been opened due to child protection concerns. The social worker insisted that every referral must be investigated, which left Allsopp feeling unsettled.
She stated, “I have broken no law and nothing about allowing my child to travel around Europe is neglectful.” Allsopp mentioned feeling angry and sickened by the situation, emphasizing the unwarranted nature of the referral.
The social worker did not disclose the name of the individual who made the referral, nor the specific concerns raised. Allsopp also indicated that the possibility of the file remaining open for potential future investigations added to her distress.
In her social media posts, Allsopp reflected on the shock of this occurrence, explaining that it was common for young people to travel independently after completing their education, and she viewed her son’s trip as a rite of passage.
The RBKC confirmed that they have a legal obligation to investigate all allegations regarding child welfare, stating the need for safeguarding children under the age of 18 as a top priority.
