Boston Celtics star forward Kristaps Porzingis is reportedly advancing in his recovery process following a leg injury sustained during the 2024 NBA Finals. Although no specific date has been set for his return to the team’s lineup, sources indicate that he may be back as early as December, potentially around Christmas.

Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston has suggested that Porzingis’s return could happen «sooner than later.» Forsberg stated on the show Early Edition, «I think it’s gonna be sooner than later in this process. This is really just guessing based on the way he’s ramped up, the progress that he’s made, and the fact that he really wants to be out there. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s earlier, I would say even maybe more towards early December.»

When asked about the recovery timeline on Media Day, Porzingis expressed eagerness to return to action, stating, «No. If I get the green light, if I am cleared medically, I’m gonna go out there and play.» This highlights his desire to contribute to the team as soon as he is deemed fit.

Forsberg further elaborated on Porzingis’s progress, noting that Porzingis, who underwent surgery in June, has intensified his pregame workout activities. He added, «It’s been five months now and he’s probably getting a little antsy. But he’s been traveling, his pregame workouts have been getting more arduous and they’re already at a level that what we saw in the playoffs before he returned for the start of the Finals.»

Forsberg stated that medical clearance is crucial for Porzingis, «Once you’re medically cleared, you need him to get game reps. You’re gonna still pace him along the way. The sooner you can get him out there, the better.»

In his maiden season with the Celtics, Porzingis averaged 20.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, contributing significantly to the team’s performance, which included a 49-15 record with him on the court during the championship campaign.

Currently, the Celtics are performing well with an 11-3 record this season in Porzingis’s absence. They are scheduled to play the undefeated Cleveland Cavaliers (15-0) in an NBA Cup group stage game at TD Garden on Tuesday night. Coverage of the game begins at 6 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Boston.
