Labour Shakeup: Emily Thornberry Ousted from Cabinet in Keir Starmer’s New Government
Long-time shadow cabinet minister Emily Thornberry has been left out of the new Labour government by Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Despite her years of service, Thornberry will not be part of Starmer’s cabinet, with human rights barrister Richard Hermer taking the lead as the Attorney General.
In a surprise turn of events, Anneliese Dodds has secured a cabinet role, being appointed to the Foreign Office and the crucial position of women and equalities minister. This change means Labour will not have a dedicated secretary of state for women and equalities, a promise previously made.
Spencer Livermore, a key Labour strategist during Tony Blair’s era, now serves as the Financial Secretary to the Treasury. The shake-up also sees fresh faces like Mariam Ambsden and Maria Eagle taking on significant roles in various departments.
Notably, Peter Hendy, the former chair of Network Rail, has been named as the transport minister in the Labour government. Other key appointments include those of Angela Eagle, Nick Thomas-Symonds, Diana Johnson, Catherine McKinnell, Chris Bryant, Alison McGovern, and Stephen Timms.
