In the controversial exchange, sideline reporter Shannon Spake questioned Ball about the team’s defensive strategy against the Bucks’ star player. In response, Ball employed an anti-gay term. The league quickly acted, administering the maximum financial penalty for his remark.

Following the Hornets’ subsequent loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers with a score of 128-114, Ball addressed the situation with the media. «Before we get started, I just want to address the comment yesterday,» Ball stated. «I really didn’t mean anything [by it] and don’t want to offend anybody. I’ve got love for everybody, and I don’t discriminate.» In the game against the Cavaliers, Ball contributed significantly, scoring 31 points and delivering 12 assists.

First-year Hornets coach Charles Lee expressed that he had a conversation with Ball concerning the incident. Lee described Ball as «very apologetic» and emphasized the importance of maintaining professional conduct. «As an organization, that is obviously not something we condone,» Lee remarked. «Our standards and what is required of our players in the environment we create is really important to us.»
