Large Counter-Protest in Bristol Thwarts Rumored Far-Right Rally
Thousands of people came together in Old Market, Bristol, this week to counter a rumored anti-immigration rally. The crowd started gathering in the late afternoon, and by 7 PM, they had shut down the road, holding up anti-racism placards and chanting their messages loud and clear.
In response to the potential unrest, hundreds of police officers were deployed in the city. The Avon and Somerset Police announced they had enhanced stop and search powers which would remain in effect until the following morning.
This rally was sparked by claims circulating on social media that protestors were planning to target an immigration lawyer’s business. Many local businesses took precautions by closing early and boarding up their windows, particularly along Old Market, recalling the violence witnessed during the earlier riots.
The police presence included mounted, dog, and drone units, with officers working long 12-hour shifts to ensure the safety of the city. Despite the concerns, the counter-protestors filled the streets, showcasing their support for Bristol’s diverse community.
One participant, Habib, originally from Gambia, expressed feelings of unity among the crowd. He emphasized that Bristol is a vibrant and welcoming city, and residents would not allow chaos to invade their home.
Desmond Brown from Growing Futures, which supports disadvantaged communities, also shared his pride at seeing so many people from various backgrounds standing together. He stated, “We’re not going to have fascists marching down into our communities” and highlighted the opportunity for communal understanding and solidarity.
As the evening progressed, the streets remained peaceful, with no sign of the anticipated far-right presence. The atmosphere was charged with positive energy, focusing on support and solidarity against hate.
