Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed role-playing game «Baldur’s Gate 3,» has announced a new hotfix that will impact the use of mods on console versions of the game. This decision comes in response to widespread reports of performance and stability issues faced by players utilizing an extensive number of mods on their consoles.

According to a statement made by Larian Studios on Twitter, players have been experiencing «instability, reduced performance, and crashes» when more than 100 mods are active on their console systems. To address these issues, Larian has confirmed that a hotfix will soon be implemented to limit the number of mods playable at any one time on consoles, such as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

The studio advises gamers to «only install the mods you know you’ll continue playing with» to enhance stability ahead of the forthcoming hotfix, which will cap mod usage. Additionally, Larian has warned that upon release, «saves with more than 100 mods will be temporarily unplayable» until players uninstall some existing mods— a move aimed at safeguarding game stability. «Saves without 100+ mods installed will remain unaffected,» Larian reassured players in a statement.

The impending fix has sparked discussions among the «Baldur’s Gate 3» community. Many players have expressed surprise at the sheer volume of mods some users have installed on consoles, with one commentator rhetorically questioning, «Who the heck is downloading over 100 mods in the first place?»

Larian Studios has also disclosed that this limit is necessary due to the unique way consoles handle mod files, which differs significantly from PCs. The studio stated, «Unlike PC, consoles can only juggle so many files at once. The more mods you have installed, the quicker this file limit is reached.»

Besides introducing the mod cap, Larian Studios has also addressed a separate issue specifically affecting the Xbox version of the game, by fixing a bug that caused crashes in multiplayer lobbies. The studio remains committed to monitoring the game’s performance on consoles and is poised to release additional updates should new issues emerge.

The company has yet to specify an exact release date for the hotfix but has promised that further details will be shared soon. Players are advised to promptly adjust their mod installations to avoid any interruptions when the update takes effect.
