Lebron James Considering Pay Cut For Demar Derozan: Lakers Pivot After Missing Out On Klay Thompson

After missing out on the opportunity to sign Klay Thompson, the Los Angeles Lakers are shifting their focus towards landing DeMar DeRozan, as reported by Chris Haynes of Turner Sports on NBA TV‘s Free Agent Fever.

Thompson recently inked a three-year deal with the Mavericks, dashing the Lakers’ hopes of pairing him with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. With Thompson off the market, DeRozan emerges as a top target for the Lakers.

DeRozan, who previously played for the Chicago Bulls, put up impressive numbers in the 2023-24 season, averaging 24 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game. His offensive prowess could provide the Lakers with a much-needed boost and alleviate some scoring pressure off James and Davis.

While James has yet to officially re-sign with the Lakers, ESPN‘s Brian Windhorst hinted that James might be willing to take a pay cut to facilitate the acquisition of DeRozan, indicating the potential interest from James’s side.

According to Haynes, the Lakers would need to explore options such as a sign-and-trade or clearing cap space to make a move for DeRozan. Talks between the Lakers and DeRozan’s agent, Aaron Goodwin, have reportedly taken place, signaling a mutual interest in a potential collaboration.

LeBron James, known for his consistent excellence on the court and in contract negotiations, has never taken a pay cut during his tenure with the Lakers. However, reports suggest that he is open to the idea if it benefits the team’s roster construction, with DeRozan now emerging as a prominent candidate.

DeRozan, a native of Compton, brings a unique skill set to the table and could significantly bolster the Lakers’ offensive capabilities. As the Lakers recalibrate their free agency strategy post-Thompson, the potential pursuit of DeRozan adds an intriguing dynamic to their offseason plans.
