Lee Greenwood’s «God Bless the USA» Resonates Through Generations
President-elect Donald Trump frequently utilized the song «God Bless the USA» at his campaign rallies, a strategy that resulted in the song reentering music charts nearly 40 years after it was first released. The artist behind the anthem, Lee Greenwood, discussed the song’s resurgence and its significance during an interview with LiveNOW from FOX.
Greenwood’s «God Bless the USA» is well known for its patriotic themes and has been a staple at political events, including Trump’s 2016 inauguration. The song’s patriotic message and Greenwood’s performances at various military benefits and with the USO have made it a symbol of American pride. In a recent interview, Greenwood disclosed that he would again perform the song at Trump’s upcoming inauguration in January 2025 for his second term.
«The inspiration is a little deeper than you might think,» Greenwood shared with Josh Breslow from LiveNOW. He explained that his experiences with the military and performances for the USO had a profound impact on crafting the song. «I was influenced by things like air shows and parades,» Greenwood mentioned, reflecting on his tours across various air bases in the U.S.
The song originally charted on the Hot Country Songs list back in 1984, reaching number seven. Recently, a rock version of «God Bless the USA,» produced in collaboration with Drew Jacobs, has landed on rock charts, breathing new life into the classic.
Lee Greenwood has a storied career featuring several hits aside from «God Bless the USA,» such as «It Turns Me Inside Out,» and «Ring On Her Finger Time On Her Hands.» However, «God Bless the USA» remains one of his most enduring successes. The track was voted by CBS News as the most recognizable patriotic song in America and was named the CMA’s Song of the Year in 1985.
Greenwood also reflected on memorable performances, including a concert for hurricane relief at Texas A&M in 2017 attended by five former U.S. presidents: Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. Greenwood noted the honor of meeting these presidents and having them sign a photograph taken at the event, a treasured memory for the singer.
Recently, Greenwood made an appearance at The Donoho Hotel in Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, where he was celebrated for his patriotic contributions and support for veterans. There, he participated in a meet and greet, signed autographs, and performed his iconic song, leaving an indelible mark on attendees.
The artist continues to inspire Americans with his performances, reinforcing his legacy as a symbol of patriotism and Americana.
