Left Write Hook: A Transformative Program for Survivors of Trauma
Left Write Hook is an innovative program designed to assist survivors of childhood sexual abuse and other forms of complex trauma in reclaiming empowerment over their bodies and narratives.
The initiative is spearheaded by Dr. Donna Lyon, a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne, who has a diverse background as a film producer, amateur boxer, and a two-time marathon runner, in addition to being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse.
Dr. Lyon, after grappling with various symptoms related to her trauma for years, embarked on a journey that led to the creation of Left Write Hook. This structured eight-week workshop integrates boxing and writing as therapeutic methods for adult survivors.
Since its inception, Left Write Hook has evolved into a registered charity led by survivors. It has also facilitated research that resulted in published findings and a documentary that highlights the experiences of participants.
Dr. Lyon’s passion for the arts began at a young age, leading her to explore storytelling through various mediums. She noted that her artistic expressions often mirrored her subconscious processing of trauma, long before she consciously acknowledged her experiences.
Her introduction to boxing came later in her recovery journey, where she sought to confront feelings of anger that had accumulated over years of trauma. Engaging in boxing not only allowed her to channel these emotions but also helped her reconnect with her body in a way that other mindfulness practices failed to provide.
To better serve other survivors, Dr. Lyon combined her boxing experience with her arts background, creating a unique curriculum for the Left Write Hook program that emphasizes both physical and emotional healing.
The pilot program launched in 2019, preceded by Dr. Lyon’s qualification as a boxing coach and her training in trauma-informed care. The project gained significant traction in 2020, leading to a collaboration for a mixed-methods study to evaluate its impact.
Eight women, ranging in age and backgrounds, participated in this pilot, engaging in a combination of boxing drills, writing exercises, and discussions about their emotional states. However, the program faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting Dr. Lyon to adapt and transition sessions online to ensure continuity of support.
Research outcomes indicated noteworthy improvements in psychological well-being among participants. Findings highlighted increased assertiveness, reduced PTSD symptoms, and greater overall well-being.
Dr. Lyon continues to facilitate Left Write Hook programs, and research is ongoing to assess its effectiveness further. There is an ongoing randomized controlled trial to measure physical and psychological outcomes, aiming to bolster evidence for such integrative programs.
The documentary detailing participants’ journeys is anticipated for theatrical release, with critics praising its ability to shed light on often marginalized narratives surrounding trauma.
