Legendary Golfer Chi Chi Rodriguez Passes Away at 88
Juan ‘Chi Chi’ Rodriguez, a beloved Hall of Fame golfer known for his playful antics on the greens, has sadly passed away at the age of 88. His death was announced by Puerto Rican senator Carmelo Javier Rios, though the cause has not been disclosed.
Rodriguez, born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, was the second of six children in a family that struggled through poverty. As a child, he helped his father harvest sugar cane while dreaming of a different future. He picked up golf by hitting tin cans with a stick, and by 12, he claimed he could shoot a score of 67.
In 1960, Rodriguez joined the PGA Tour, becoming the first golfer from Puerto Rico to achieve that milestone. His first win came in 1963 at the Denver Open, and throughout his career, he won a total of eight times on the PGA Tour, as well as 22 titles on the Champions Tour.
Jay Monahan, the PGA Tour Commissioner, expressed deep sorrow over Rodriguez’s passing, praising his remarkable talent and passion for charity. Rodriguez was known for his vibrant personality, having his fair share of fun on the course with his famous sword dance after sinking a birdie putt.
Beyond golf, Rodriguez was deeply committed to giving back to the community. He founded the Chi Chi Rodriguez Youth Foundation in the Tampa area, aiming to support at-risk kids. He often remarked on his love for children, stemming from a childhood he felt was robbed by financial hardships.
In addition to his dedication to his foundation, Rodriguez also enjoyed sharing his stories and humor. He famously claimed to be clairvoyant and shared amusing anecdotes about his life. His unique approach to the game, including his celebratory routines on the course, left a lasting impression on fans and fellow golfers alike.
Rodriguez remained active in recent years, returning to Puerto Rico where he was involved in local golf community projects and hosted a radio show. His legacy endures not only in golf history but also in the many lives he touched through his philanthropic efforts.
