Lewis Hamilton to Join Ferrari in 2025, Carlos Sainz Moves to Williams
Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, is set to join Ferrari in 2025, marking a significant shift in the Formula 1 landscape. This move has resulted in Carlos Sainz signing a multi-year contract with Williams, as reported by Mario Andretti to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Mario Andretti, the 1978 World Champion, expressed his disappointment over Carlos Sainz not acquiring a position with a front-running team for the 2025 season. «It’s great to see a driver like Hamilton coming to Ferrari. I am sure he will bring a lot of knowledge, after a whole career spent working with British teams, and also a lot of interest from the fans for this new phase in his life,» said Andretti. He added, «I have to say that I feel very sorry for Carlos Sainz, who in recent years has shown that he can fight at the top and is often on a par with Charles Leclerc.»
Carlos Sainz had been linked with Red Bull and Mercedes as potential teams following his exit from Ferrari, but ultimately, he opted for Williams. Sainz will partner with Alex Albon to aid Williams in their rebuilding phase, a project directed by team boss James Vowles.
In an interview with Sky Sports F1, Sainz opened up about the challenging transition. «I’ve definitely come to peace, and I am a true believer that if I’m not going there, it’s because life just doesn’t want me to be there – there’s something else coming after that, that will actually turn out to be good,» Sainz commented. He admitted, «It hurt at the time, we all have egos, and I have a driver ego, and I couldn’t understand it at the time.»
Meanwhile, Ferrari’s current star driver, Charles Leclerc, is eager to team up with Hamilton. Leclerc has expressed his readiness to test himself alongside the most successful driver in Formula 1 history.
Lewis Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes comes after he activated a release clause in his contract, paving the way for a move to Ferrari. Mercedes has announced that Kimi Antonelli, a promising young driver stepping up from Formula 2, will fill Hamilton’s seat and join George Russell for the 2025 season.
Sainz reminiscences about his time at McLaren, highlighting the strong partnership he shared with Lando Norris as beneficial to his career growth. «It’s a similar way to Charles here [at Ferrari], although maybe Charles has always been seen maybe as the future of the project,» he stated.
The new chapters for Sainz with Williams and Hamilton with Ferrari set the stage for an exciting 2025 Formula 1 season, as fans wait to see how these high-profile moves will influence the dynamics of the sport.
