Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has expressed his ambitious electoral goals in south-west London, aiming for a triple win in the upcoming election on July 4. Traveling on a train from Waterloo to Wimbledon, Sir Ed highlighted the party’s focus on areas such as Kingston, Sutton and Cheam, and Carshalton and Wallington, as key targets for the Lib Dems in the region.

Referencing the concept of the ‘Blue Wall’, Sir Ed urged voters in London and its commuter belt, including the Home Counties from Hertfordshire to Surrey, to support the Liberal Democrats in challenging the Conservatives. He criticized figures like Liz Truss, Jeremy Hunt, and Rishi Sunak for their policies impacting the public.

Despite past electoral setbacks, Sir Ed remains optimistic, suggesting that the Lib Dems could secure surprising wins in London, including areas like Dorking, Horley, Woking, and Esher and Walton. The party’s campaign is locally targeted, focusing on key issues such as pollution in smaller rivers like the Wandle, Lea, Wey, and Hogsmill.

Furthermore, the Liberal Democrats have emphasized their stance on healthcare, promising significant investment in the NHS. Sir Ed dismissed comparisons to the policies of McDonnell and Corbyn, asserting that the Lib Dem manifesto is both ambitious and prudent, particularly in prioritizing health and care.

While the party is not solely focused on Brexit, Sir Ed denied accusations of ignoring the economic consequences of leaving the EU. The Lib Dems aim to attract a diverse range of voters, including traditional Conservative supporters disillusioned by issues of integrity, honesty, and governance within the Tory Party.

Sir Ed also addressed personal challenges, such as the Horizon Post Office scandal, as former postmistress Yvonne Tracey stands against him in Kingston and Surbiton. Despite this, he remains confident in his record, highlighting his advocacy for health services and commuters in the area.

As the election approaches, Sir Ed expressed his belief that the Liberal Democrats have a strong chance of success in south-west London, declaring it could be a ‘game, set and match’ scenario for the party. With a focus on engaging voters through policy discussions and active campaigning, the Lib Dems are determined to make their mark in the upcoming election.
