Liberal MP Rory Amon Charged with Child Sex Offences

NSW Liberal MP Rory Amon, representing the Pittwater electorate in Sydney‘s Northern Beaches, has been charged with multiple historical child sex offences. The 35-year-old politician was arrested at Manly Police Station early in the morning on August 30, 2024.

Mr. Amon faces serious charges including five counts of sexual intercourse with a person aged between 10 and 14, along with two counts of attempting sexual intercourse with a person within the same age range. Additionally, he has been charged with two counts of indecently assaulting a person under 16 and committing an act of indecency with a person under 16.

The investigation began in June 2022, led by detectives at the Northern Beaches Police Area Command, following reports of an alleged sexual assault that took place in Mona Vale in July 2017. The police were informed that a teenage boy had allegedly been assaulted by an individual known to him.

In March 2023, Strike Force NOORAL was established to further investigate the incident. After thorough inquiries, Mr. Amon was taken into custody today.

Following his arrest, Mr. Amon was granted strict conditional bail, requiring him to appear at Manly Local Court on September 18, 2024. Prior to his election to parliament last year, he had served on the Northern Beaches Council from 2017 to 2023.

Mr. Amon is currently serving as the shadow assistant minister for infrastructure, transport, roads, and youth. The announcement of the charges coincided with a budget estimates hearing where NSW Police Minister Yasmin Catley and Commissioner Karen Webb were present.

Commissioner Webb indicated that she would take questions regarding the processes related to Mr. Amon’s charging on notice, while Ms. Catley noted that this information was unexpected for her.

The state opposition has since cancelled a media conference that was scheduled for Friday afternoon.
