Lille’s New Season Hopes and Challenges
After four successful years, Jonathan David has firmly established himself in Lille’s football history after joining from KAA Gent. The talented striker has been a fan favorite, and there’s chatter about him potentially moving on every summer. Yet, as of now, he’s still contributing his speed and skills to Les Dogues for another season.
This summer, the buzz around David could lead to a transfer, but if he stays, he’s likely to be a strong contender for the top scorer title, especially after Kylian Mbappé’s departure. Last season, David scored 19 goals, making him the second-top scorer, following a 24-goal season the previous year.
Lille has also made a significant signing to boost their attack with the addition of Osame Sahraoui from Heerenveen. Known for his dribbling skills, the Norwegian winger notched up eight goals and eight assists last season and will help fill the gap left by Yusuf Yazici and others.
With the prospect of playing in Europe this season, Lille’s squad feels a bit thin. Their president Olivier Létang has indicated that they’ll be waiting to see which European competition they’ll be in before making more signings, but time is ticking as the transfer window closes.
The backbone of Lille’s defense looks promising, thanks to Lucas Chevalier, who has been making remarkable strides in his position. With Bruno Genésio now at the helm, Lille is likely shifting to a back three, a strategy that plays well to their defensive strengths.
Genésio’s appointment has also prompted a tactical shift from using fullbacks to wingbacks. Players like Tiago Santos and Gabriel Gudmundsson fit ideally in this new setup, but Lille will still need an additional left wing-back to enhance this new strategy.
In the midfield, Lille is facing challenges after Nabil Bentaleb suffered a heart attack. While he’s recovering, they may look for another midfielder to fill the gap, especially with Ignacio Miramon seeking a loan move.
Upfront, Lille has variety with David, Edon Zhegrova, Rémy Cabella, and new signing Sahraoui, so they’re not focused on bolstering their attack unless David exits this summer.
Following Paulo Fonseca’s departure to AC Milan, Lille has brought in Genésio, who aims to keep the team competitive with his attacking style. He’s set to employ a 3-4-1-2 formation, similar to that of his first match against Fenerbahçe.
With big ambitions for the season ahead, Lille is eager to make an impact in the French Ligue 1 and European competitions, but they will need to ensure they have enough depth and quality in their squad.
