Live-Action Adaptation of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Announced by Director Dean DeBlois
After nearly a decade of success with the animated trilogy, director Dean DeBlois is set to bring ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ into the realm of live-action cinema. Initially co-directed by Chris Sanders and DeBlois, the beloved series will see its characters, including the youthful Viking Hiccup and his dragon companion Toothless, reimagined in a new medium.
DeBlois, speaking to Empire, expressed the anticipated changes that a live-action adaptation would bring to the story. «It’s so dialled-up in terms of stakes — having a fully credible, photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill him,» he remarked. This shift promises to add both physical and emotional depth to the narrative, drawing audiences into the intense world of the Isle of Berk.
Central to the film is the casting of Mason Thames, known for his previous lead roles, as the protagonist Hiccup. The director described Thames as the embodiment of the character, highlighting his blend of awkwardness and vulnerability that emerged during auditions when Thames was just 15 years old. «He represents all of the oddballs out there, and there are many of us,» DeBlois noted, signifying the universal appeal and relatability of Hiccup’s character.
Fans can expect the live-action version to bring a fresh perspective to the dynamic between Hiccup and Toothless, adding more complexity and ‘teeth’ to their story. Anticipation is building as ‘How To Train Your Dragon’ prepares for its UK release in June. Insights into the film are featured in Empire’s Ultimate 2025 Preview, alongside other exciting upcoming projects like ‘Andor Season 2.’
