There’s some buzz brewing around Liverpool and their interest in Martin Zubimendi, a talented midfielder from Real Sociedad. As the transfer window continues, the club is proactively exploring options to strengthen their squad, especially with a new No. 6 in mind for head coach Arne Slot.

However, Liverpool hasn’t yet made a move by submitting a bid for Zubimendi. Sociedad, on their part, is not keen on selling the 25-year-old midfielder. That being said, sources indicate that if Zubimendi expresses a desire to leave, the club may consider granting his request.

Reports earlier in the week highlighted that Liverpool is optimistic about inking a deal to sign Zubimendi. But the situation is complex, particularly due to his hefty €60 million release clause, which would need to be paid in full if Sociedad is unwilling to negotiate a lower fee.

Convincing Zubimendi to make the switch to Liverpool poses its own challenge. Previous interested parties have struggled to pull off this feat, with clubs from other leagues, including Atletico Madrid and Arsenal, having shown interest in the midfielder last season.

Zubimendi recently had a role in Spain’s triumphant title-winning squad at the Under-21 European Championship. While he mostly played second fiddle to his teammate in the No. 6 spot, he did get some significant game time in the tournament.

Slot has openly acknowledged that Liverpool is on the lookout for a top-tier No. 6 from outside the Premier League to enhance the team. During the pre-season, he assigned the role to Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Ryan Gravenberch, with Slot praising Gravenberch’s performance.

«Ryan did really well in that position during our win over Manchester United,» Slot commented, underscoring the competition within the squad. Liverpool faced some challenges this summer, losing several midfield players, including Jordan Henderson, who made a recent move to the Saudi Pro League.

Slot noted the difficult balancing act of finding new players who meet Liverpool’s high standards while also being available. His sporting director, Richard Hughes, is reportedly working hard to explore options in the market.

As the team prepares for the upcoming season, Zubimendi stands out as a fitting candidate for their midfield needs. Remember, he’s someone who can handle pressure, make smart decisions, and contribute significantly to building up attacks from deep.

The attention on Zubimendi highlights Liverpool’s emphasis on a more possession-based style of play under Arne Slot, contrasting the previous tactics. With players still returning from international duties, it’s crucial for Slot to address any gaps in his midfield lineup as soon as possible.
