Liverpool FC Tops Premier League in Sustainability Efforts

Liverpool FC has showcased remarkable dedication to sustainability by powering 94% of its operations with clean energy during the 2022/23 season. The club’s comprehensive sustainability strategy, known as The Red Way, is part of Liverpool’s ambitious plan to cut carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon net zero status by 2040.

The Red Way initiative has resulted in a 29% reduction in carbon emissions since its inception in 2021. Notably, 100% of emissions from football operations have been offset. The program has successfully raised awareness of sustainability and encouraged eco-friendly fan behaviors, such as a significant increase in plastic bottle recycling at Anfield from 25% to 90%.

For two consecutive years, Liverpool FC has been ranked as the most environmentally sustainable Premier League club in the Sport Positive League. Rishi Jain, Director of Impact at Liverpool, commended the club, stating, «The Red Way is a key focus for us, and we are thrilled to see its rapid adoption and implementation across all aspects of our operations.»

Burnley FC, however, faced financial challenges, reporting a post-tax loss of £27.9m for the latest financial period. The club’s relegation from the Premier League contributed to a significant drop from a £26m profit in the previous accounting period. Their auditors, BDO, have expressed concerns about Burnley’s financial stability, citing a ‘material uncertainty’ regarding the club’s ‘going concern.’

M&C Saatchi Sport & Entertainment announced the elevation of Laura Coller to the role of UK CEO. Coller, who previously served as Managing Director, has been instrumental in driving the growth of the agency. The UK-based cruise company will continue as the headline sponsor of Essex Cricket’s 50-over shirts across various teams. Daryl Townson, Commercial Manager at England Cricket, expressed delight over the extended partnership, highlighting the growth and innovation achieved through the collaboration.

In a new venture, Wolverhampton Wanderers partnered with Japanese J-League team Shonan Bellmare to focus on developing talent within their academies and expanding player and coach opportunities. The collaboration aims to strengthen both clubs’ presence internationally and nurture elite Asian players for potential transitions to European football.
