Lucky Whitehead Returns to the Blue Bombers
It’s an exciting time for Lucky Whitehead as he gets ready to step back onto the field as a Winnipeg Blue Bombers player. After five years away and 285 days since his last game paycheck, Whitehead is feeling the butterflies ahead of tonight’s matchup against the B.C. Lions, the team he played for before returning to Winnipeg.
Speaking to reporters after a walk-through practice, Whitehead expressed how emotional the moment would be for him. “Just to hear the crowd, come out of that tunnel, just playing ball again, right? I’m super, super excited,” he said.
Whitehead joins the Blue Bombers during a tough time for the team as they face injuries to key players including Drew Wolitarsky and Pat Neufeld, who are both on the six-game injured list. His return adds speed and experience to a receiving corps that needs rejuvenation.
Last year, Whitehead had a solid season with the B.C. Lions, accumulating 58 receptions for 728 yards and three touchdowns. With several key players like Dalton Schoen and Kenny Lawler also out due to injuries, Whitehead’s experience could be just what the team needs.
When asked about his role with the team, Whitehead flashed his trademark smile and confidently stated, “I can be great, a big charm, honestly.” He believes his speed will help to open up opportunities for his teammates and is eager to connect with quarterback Zach Collaros.
In the past months, Whitehead took time to learn patience while waiting for his opportunity with the Bombers. He spent his time gardening and coaching kids, which taught him valuable lessons that he’s now bringing to the field.
He reminisced about his previous time with the team, saying he missed the camaraderie of the locker room. “The locker room, there’s no experience about it,” he noted, adding that the relationships built off the field are what truly make the game special.
As he prepares to step onto the field tonight, he’s focused not just on the game but also on energizing the fans. He is ready to show his high energy and lift the spirits of everyone in the stadium.
