Madonna Criticizes Hollywood Producers for Urging Her to Downsize Biopic
The pop icon Madonna has openly criticized Hollywood producers for urging her to «think smaller» in the making of her upcoming biopic. In an Instagram post on Monday, the «Material Girl» singer expressed her frustration at the pressure to scale down her project, which she has been developing over the past four years. «After struggling for days in LA, listening to producers and agents tell me why I couldn’t make my film—downsize-down scale—think smaller, they say,» the 66-year-old musician wrote.
Madonna indicated that the challenges she faced in getting her biopic made were emblematic of broader difficulties throughout her life. «I realized that everything in my life is going to be challenged. No easy rides for me,» she commented, highlighting the unique life she has led and how it compels her to undertake her project in an «unusual way.» She added, «I guess I should be grateful… It forces me to think outside the box.»
The Grammy-winning artist extended her gratitude towards her friends, who have provided «just the fuel I needed to keep going!» and discussed a strategy that involves being «even more fearless.» She emphasized the importance of not diminishing one’s vision, stating, «Art = Survival. We cannot shrink and make ourselves smaller.» Madonna also encouraged a positive outlook by asserting, «If you want something badly enough in life—the whole universe will conspire to help you get it.»
Madonna concluded her post by soliciting opinions from her fanbase regarding the format of her biopic, questioning whether it should be made into a series or a feature film. «Think before you answer !!» she advised. Her post received a variety of responses. Among them was actress Debi Mazar, who suggested writing a book first to ensure accuracy, and noted her own experience with documentary series offers. «For me…book first. Facts,» she said.
Other fans engaged in the discourse with differing opinions. One admirer expressed that a series could offer more «subtlety and nuance» as well as a wider audience, while another firmly requested a feature film, asserting, «Your love belongs on the big screen!»
Initial plans for Madonna’s biopic began in September 2020, with actress Julia Garner expected to portray the star. However, the project encountered delays as Madonna decided to prioritize her «Celebration» tour. As she navigates the challenges of bringing her life story to film, her public critique of the industry’s insistence on downsizing remains a noteworthy statement on maintaining artistic integrity.
