Maharashtra Rainstorm Causes Havoc with Floods and Landslides
A severe rainstorm has hit Maharashtra, leading to tragic incidents and disrupted daily life, especially in Pune and Mumbai.
In Pune, heavy rainfall resulted in the deaths of four individuals—three young adults electrocuted while moving their food stall away from the rising waters of the Mutha River, and one person who lost their life in a landslide.
The city of Mumbai is also feeling the effects, with numerous roads severely waterlogged and public transport facing significant disruptions. Authorities have taken precautionary measures by declaring holidays for schools and colleges in several areas, including Palghar and Raigad.
As the rain continues, the Khadakwasla Dam has reached capacity, prompting officials to release large volumes of water into the Mutha River, which has led to flooding in surrounding neighborhoods. Residents are being warned to stay alert as water levels rise.
The situation in Pune’s Ekta Nagri and Vitthal Nagar areas worsened quickly, with water entering homes and buildings. Emergency services have deployed boats for evacuations.
Meanwhile, schools in Pune city, as well as several rural areas such as Bhor, Velha, and Maval, have been ordered to close for the day. Local authorities are advising citizens to avoid unnecessary travel.
The rain has also impacted train services in the region, with railway officials working overnight to ensure safety and restore regular operations.
In Mumbai, three lakes supplying the city with water have overflowed as rainfall continues, pushing water levels to critical highs. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued alerts predicting continued heavy rainfall.
As the rain wreaks havoc across the region, many districts are bracing for further downpours, raising concerns about additional flooding and further disruptions in daily life.
